Productive Weekends Are Fun!

I probably should have titled this post "productive weekends are exhausting!" after this one, but when things are exhausting in a good way, it automatically makes them fun.  While my usual choice for ideal weekends involves either being blissfully lazy or having some sort of exciting adventure, I have to admit that productive weekends are pretty awesome as well.  And by productive, I don't mean "wow Melissa, you just spent the entire weekend working again." (I am slowly getting much better with this.)  I mean fitting a whole lot of stuff that normally gets ignored (for example, a long overdue/major house spring cleaning and de-cluttering) into those two days, and just kicking ass until you are so physically drained that all you want to do is flop onto your bed with your clothes on and dream of everything you accomplished.  That kind of sums up the weekend I just had.  I'm not sure if either Robbie or I sat down for more than 5 minutes total, but it was worth it.

And here is what happened this weekend, in my little world...

1. Robbie made homemade doughnuts for breakfast.  He is an awesome cook.  I am not.
2. We went on a Goodwill run and scored a shelf for our laundry area.  And this almost-new Ann Taylor denim jacket, for $4!
3. I spent 4 hours organizing my train wreck of a closet.  I am borderline embarrassed about the amount of clothing I own, and a large portion of it has been living in laundry baskets.  I finally went through everything, filled two garbage bags for Goodwill, and transferred the laundry basket madness to my closet and dresser.  I then organized by type of garment and season, which does not come naturally to the disorganized spirit. And yes, those space saver hanger things totally work.
4. During the Insane Cleaning Spree of 2012, I came across this amazing photo of my mom from the 70s, taken at the commune where she lived.  She will forever be infinitely cooler than me.

5. Also found during the cleaning spree was this little gem, which had been hidden under my bed in a stack of magazines.  It's from the street style section of the July 22, 2007 edition of Women's Wear Daily, which highlighted Bonnaroo Music Festival.  That's me in the yellow dress, and that was my sixth Bonnaroo. I vended my clothing at the first six of them, and in '08 and '09 (after I'd retired from my vending-at-festivals career) I just went for fun.  In fact, the last two years were the only I've skipped.  Because I'm much lamer than I used to be, I'm thinking I'll likely skip this year too.  But Radiohead, Bon Iver, and Feist are making it a little harder to say no.  Oh yeah, and Robbie's band is playing it too.  So we'll see.  P.S. My feet were filthy in this photo.
6. And yet another treasure unearthed in the midst of our cleaning madness: "This Room is Mine," aka my favorite book as a little girl.  The illustrations are so rad.
7. We took a cleaning break on Saturday and drove out to a local farm to take some photos for an outfit post.  It was a gorgeous day with perfect lighting.  I'm going to be extra sad when Robbie goes back on the road this week, because outfit post photo shoots are 526 times easier with him doing the photographing.
8. Bubby and Bean was featured on Etsy's front page. Woot! (*This actually happened on Friday, but I just remembered it. I think my brain is foggy from our cleaning overdose).

9. I decided at 1 AM on Saturday night that I absolutely had to to dye Easter eggs.  All we had were organic brown eggs, so I wasn't sure how they'd turn out.  But I was actually pretty pleased.  The colors were really earthy but still vibrant.
10. While I was having my late night egg-dying session, Robbie decided to "bust out the Kitchenaid" as he calls it, and whip up some chocolate chip cookies to take to my dad's for Sunday morning Easter brunch.  Everyone loved them (duh).  Also, if you have never microwaved Peeps, do it.  This was part of the activity at my dad's after we ate, and it was a pretty impressive spectacle.  Yes, my family finds entertainment in watching marshmallow candies transform into large, monster-like creatures through the use of heat. We're easily amused.
11. On Sunday, we drank an unhealthy amount of coffee to fuel our cleaning spree.
12. I continued to find buried treasure among the clutter.  Any fellow children of the '80s remember Fashion Plates?!  I loved them so much that my sister bought me this set off eBay a couple of years ago.  I am so playing with them later.

13. We took a little break to enjoy the beautiful weather (and killer sky) on our back porch.
14. We finally (almost) finished cleaning.  There is still a lot to do.  But we did good.  And I was pretty excited to find this little gem: the initial sketch I did of Bubby dog that eventually became the official Bubby and Bean logo.

Almost all of these photos were taken from my trusty Instagram account, by the way.  You can see more of my random photos under the user name @bubbyandbean.  And all you Android people, welcome to Instagram!  It's nice to have you. :)  (If you use Instagram, leave your user name in the comments so I can check out your photos!)

What did you do this weekend?

  1. Your weekend makes me jealous! I love the random stuff I always find when I do any deep cleaning - I'm glad I'm not the only disorganized soul that has so many treasures stashed away :)

  2. Wow, your weekend was HIGHLY productive! My weekend: going to Titanic with friends, hanging out at IHOP, housecleaning, going shopping with my daughters (found a prom dress for $10!), dinner with MIL, gathering at church, going through my closet, and blogging.

  5. This is inspiring me to clean my ass off today. I've got that spring cleaning bug for sure, but it's currently being trumped by my overly lazy tendencies. Damn! I need to turn some ABBA on or something and get shit done. :)

  6. Whoa, you weren't kidding about being productive! I was slightly less so :) But mostly because our weekend was filled up with family stuff. I'm really itching for a good spring cleaning though, so maybe this weekend I can go crazy on that :)

  9. Awesome to see the spring cleaning happening so early! Also love that so much went to the goodwill... Love that place.

I really like this format too, it took me a while to realize that the photos were numbered, but once I put it all together, I really enjoyed.

No one ever said being exhausted and having fun couldnt be synonyms.

  12. Fashion Plates! Not only did I have those, but there was another Barbie variety that made its way into our house. Good times!

We did a lot of cleaning this weekend, too, because my parents were coming to town and I didn't want them thinking we lived in squalor. I was a little sore afterwards, too.

  13. I LOVED fashion plates too! I would name each girl I "made" and play paper dolls with them afterwords (there ended up being a lot of twins :)
