My Style >> Floating Feathers, Chilly Winds

Let me start this post off by stating that I have mad respect for style bloggers who post outfits everyday.  It's actually been a full month since my last outfit post and there is a sole reason for this: it's cold.  Seriously, those of you who lives in climates like we have here in Chicago and continue to photograph your outfits outside throughout the late fall and winter are worthy of awards.  If I could wear my coat in every 'My Style' post and/or if my house had large and numerous windows with great indoor lighting, these would be a lot more frequent.  I am one of those people who lacks the ability to tolerate cold of any kind, making photographing outside with any amount of bare skin exposed slightly painful.  Or maybe I'm just a big ol' baby.

That said, sometimes there is an outfit I love so much, I just have to share it, despite cloud-covered skies and chilly winds that make for shivers so strong that 75% of the photos we take are blurred.  And this, my friends, is one of those outfits. If you want to make me happy, give me a dress made from flowing fabric printed with floating feathers.  That is exactly the kind of garment for which I'm willing to sacrifice being covered in goosebumps.

This dress (called 'Floating Under the Feathers' by Sugarlips) is one of those special pieces of clothing that, although made from a lightweight fabric, works year-round.  I picked it out assuming that it would get the most wear during summertime, so I was pretty delighted when I received it and realized that with the right tights and shoes, it actually works just as well during the colder months.  Yes, I was chilly (to say the least) wearing it outside without a coat for these pics, but it was perfect indoors (and even outdoors with the proper outerwear).  I'm a fan of wearing lighter shades in the fall or winter, especially tans and creams, and think this dress will be ideal for holiday gatherings.  I can see myself pairing it with some sheer black tights and heeled ankle boots to dress up, or an oversized sweater, a scarf, plum tights and flats for more casual occasions.  I wore it out on a dinner date with Robbie after we took these photos, and both the hostess and server complimented me on the feathers.  The print is pretty amazing, I have to say.

The majority of accessories I own work really well with the style of the dress, so it was easy to quickly grab a few things to thrown on and still feel semi put together.  I bought two pairs of these tights at Target a few years ago, and wish I'd gotten more.  The pattern is kind of exquisite really, and makes them look semi-sheer from a distance.  The studded wrap bracelet, which came from OASAP, is my new favorite, and the absolutely gorgeous earrings, made by the amazing Laura over at Roots and Feathers, are on regular rotation around here.  Fair Ivy sent me the delicately elegant silver necklace, and the super comfy oxford shoes, which you've seen me wear several times around here, are from the fine ladies over at B.A.I.T.  And just like all of the others I tend to wear, the hat was stolen from my husband.  For a man who dresses up once or twice a year and only wears ratty baseball caps, he sure has an extensive collection of great hats. Thanks babe.

Do you have any favorite dresses that work for year-round wear?  And if you're a style blogger, got any tips for photographing outside when it's f-r-e-e-z-i-n-g?

  6. You do look really cold. Poor you! I would just wear my coat and take it off for 2 secs to get the shot and then bundle up again. I agree; it's not worth it to freeze to death trying to get perfect outfit photos.

  7. I can't believe you took these pictures outside! Brrrr! The back of the dress is gorgeous, though, so I'm glad you didn't have a jacket on.

It actually occurred to me the other day that I could take outfit pictures in the sunroom. I needed more natural light, but I just couldn't bring myself to go outside, haha. It worked out pretty well!
