Let's Talk Sofas: My Current Favorites

Modern + Timeless Sofas // Bubby and Bean

The time is coming, my friends, for me to take the leap into buying a new couch. Our current worn out khaki number has seen better days, and although I'd definitely use it in another room (with a different shade of slipcovers, hopefully) should we buy a bigger place, right now our living room is in dire need of a sofa upgrade. Let me preface this by saying that I am not one of those people who has a huge home decorating budget. At all. Not even close. It's not that I'm cheap about it - it's that the times where I invest in a costly item for my home are few and far between. Mainly, I am notoriously careful about making furniture purchases. If I buy something, it's going to be a part of my house for a long time (which isn't always easy for someone who admittedly tends to find herself drawn to trends). The deal is that it is important to me to create a beautiful living space for myself and my family, so if we need a new piece of furniture, I spend a lot of time choosing something that is timeless and well made, and that I really, really love.

Now that I've explained my situation, let's get to the fun stuff: sofa shopping. I've spent lots of moments of precious free time looking at different couch options over the last couple of months. There is compromise involved too - I look at design, and my husband looks at comfort level. My goal is to find something both beautiful and practical that will last through daily use and be part of our home for years. And although I usually go straight for grays, whites, or black, the rest of our paint and decor are neutral enough that we cold potentially invest in a colorful couch if we wanted. It's also fun to just pick a few favorites that are a little out of our style comfort zone, but that inspire me in my search. The sofas you see above, which can all be found at one of my absolute favorite stores, Crate and Barrel, are a mix of these things. They're all very different, but each one has tastefully simple lines and is modern in design, but with a certain timelessness that I think is important to furniture. In our wildest wishes, what we'd really love is a set of two, or a sectional, like maybe the Petrie Sectional in Graphite. That would be a dream.

Have any of you done couch shopping lately? Which of the sofas from above is your favorite?

  1. I love C & B! #6 looks very comfortable! Our couch is similar to the last one - I'm thinking of changing the slip covers to a light grey though :)

  2. Crate & Barrel is one of my faves, too. #1 is very close to what we have now, except ours is lighter and has buttons in the tufts. I'm swooning over #2, which would be a good choice if our next house is sporting more traditional architecture. (See, I'm always thinking future house, too, hahaha.)

  3. There's something about sofa shopping that, to me, never gets old - even though I'm very happy with the one we have now, and hope that it lasts another ten years at least, I can't stop myself admiring new ones and dreaming of how they could anchor my living room. I love everything in this post - but my dream sofa is one that is all style and no function, in tufted velvet with gold feet.

  5. I think I love them all! We really want a new sofa, but there are several barriers to buying one right now (third floor apartment with no elevator, small apartment, no selection in Hawaii, etc), so we have to wait until next year.

There's nothing wrong with being a careful furniture shopper! My parents re-upholstered their couch a couple years ago, but they bought a nice, well-made one when they got married 35+ years ago and it's still going strong.
