How Refreshing My Intimates Collection Was the Self Care I Needed

This post is sponsored by Kohl’s. I was paid for this post and received the included intimates as compensation.

Interesting title, huh? It's true you guys. Refreshing my bra and underwear drawer was exactly what I needed to, well, refresh myself too. But I'll get to that more in a minute.

As women, we tend to put others before ourselves. We're good like that. But it can come with a price. For me, I work from home and also take care of a two year old and a four year old. When my husband (who works on the road for a band) is home, I get a lot of time to focus on work, and there are two of us parenting, so things go fairly smoothly. But when he's gone, I have a hefty weight on my shoulders. The first few months of each year, he is on tour pretty nonstop, so everyday life is challenging. And exhausting. I'm single parenting, squeezing all of my work into nap times, after the kids are asleep at night, and into the one or two periods each week where I have a babysitter - which leaves no time at all for myself. After several weeks of that, I am fried. And I am often faced with little reminders of this lack of me time - whether that means disorganized piles of my personal things scattered throughout the house, or a calendar full of plans only for my children or job, or broken fingernails and unwashed hair and holes in my underwear.

And that brings me back to underwear.

I looked in my underwear/bra drawer recently, after several weeks of you know, forgetting about myself, and realized that I was in serious need of an update. So many holes. So many stretched out straps. So much hot mess. Honestly, it was the perfect metaphor for how tired, burned out, and stretched thin I'd been feeling in general. You hear the term "self care" everywhere these days (and as a woman, I think it's about time the concept is widely discussed), and I knew then and there this mama needed some serious self care. And it was going to start with my intimates drawer. Really though, I figured, what better symbol of taking care of myself, for myself, than by throwing out my old undergarments and replacing them with some pretty new pieces? They're the first things I put on every morning, and I decided it was time to start each day doing something for me, even if it just meant putting on bras and panties I love.

My husband came back from tour for a few days that Sunday, and the first thing I did (after basically throwing the kids on him, if we're being real) was to take Kohl's new Bra Fit Quiz. It took just a couple of minutes and was incredibly helpful in determining the exact size and styles of bras I needed. I then headed directly to my local Kohl's to do a little intimates overhaul. I started in the bra section and picked up one of my favorites for a go-to everyday bra, The No Side Effects Underwire Bra from Warner's. (This bra is everything, you guys. So comfortable and versatile.) I then got myself a couple of new styles I hadn't tried before - a pretty black number from Warner's and a sexy navy lace bra from Maidenform. It felt fantastic (even in the store dressing room) to see myself in beautiful bras that fit perfectly. Score one for self care through undergarments! After that I browsed the (vast!) selection of women's underwear. In an effort to make sure every mood and event was covered, I opted for some comfy cotton bikinis from Jockey (my favorites) and a couple of sexier pieces from Maidenform and Warner's. (I mean, look at those navy lace boy shorts! So hot!) I can't lie, just the act of shopping (alone!) for pieces to refresh my intimates collection felt wonderful and luxurious. And getting home and reorganizing my underwear and bra drawer with these lovely new pieces felt like the perfect symbol for replacing my current state of exhausted frazzleness (not a word, but I'm using it) with something fresh and calm. Truly.

As silly as it sounds, when I'm feeling really drained, even the thought of having to care for myself can seem overwhelming to me. Taking small steps and doing little things for myself - like giving my intimates collection an overhaul - is what ultimately helps the most. The best part is that every time I put on one of these bras or panties to start my day, I'm reminded that I matter too. And that's pretty great, if you ask me.

If you're in the need of a little self care, I can't recommend an intimates collection refresh enough. Trust me on this! And lucky for you, you can save some serious cash while you're doing it this month at Kohl's during their Semi-Annual Intimates Event, going on 3/2 - 3/26. From 3/2 - 3/18, you can also take $10 off $40 in Intimates with promo code INTIMATES10. Woot! And from 3/2 - 3/11 Kohl's is offering $19.99 Bonus Buy Bras (12 bras featured as top customer-rated). If you take advantage, let me know which pieces you end up getting!

Have any of you done an intimates drawer overhaul lately? What are your favorite small things to do to care for yourself?

  10. Thanks for this amazing post!! My bras and panties drawer has given me chronic anxiety my whole life, but these tips are so great. I’m all about trying new ways of organizing and I’m loving the ideas to update undergarments' drawer. Loved that blue and black bra-panty set. Just wanted to share a brand of lingerie I purchased from Cosabella an Italian brand and I think their styling would be totally up your street.
