I thought I'd change up this week's 'Friday is For Favorites' and put together a round-up of some of my current favorite home decor items.  I decided the other day that I truly cannot look at my current living room design for much longer, and have spent several late nights this week lying in bed, unable to sleep after long work days, searching online for ideas to redecorate.  I love our furniture (and am not willing to make any big purchases like that right now anyway), but I feel like my style has evolved quite a bit since I last decorated a couple of years ago.  The room is currently very bold and colorful, with books lined up by color on the bookshelf, red curtains, and lots of vibrant accents.  These days I'm much more drawn to neutrals, bright whites, metallics, and charcoal grey.

When I was growing up, my mom would rearrange the living room furniture and change up a few decor pieces a couple of times a year, and I remember feeling like I was in a whole new room every time.  So tomorrow, Robbie and I are going on an outing to IKEA to pick up some new decor items with a goal of doing the same thing.  I want to make this a quick, easy project (where I'm not spending a lot of money), but still create a visible change.  The decor items you see above are the types of things I'm hoping to incorporate.  I'll be sure to post before and after pictures once it's done!

What are your plans this weekend?  Today is the 98th birthday of my absolutely amazing grandmother, 'Maggo.'  Yes, 98th.  She is truly the most bad ass lady I've ever known you guys.  She's traveled (and lived) all over the world, has a degree in chemistry, and used to work as a fashion designer (runs in the family).  She also went mountain climbing and white water rafting in her late '80s, which makes me feel like pretty much the lamest person ever in comparison.  We're getting together with her this evening for a birthday dinner, and I can't wait to celebrate with her.  (I also just found out that my sister and her husband are making a last minute trip up to Chicago to join us!  Yay!).  Other than that and our visit to IKEA (and possibly Crate and Barrel if we have time*), I don't have much planned, which is so totally alright by me.

*Remember in the movie 'Old School' when Will Ferrel's character is talking about their big plans for the weekend and says that they're going to head to Home Depot and "maybe Bed Bath and Beyond, but I don't know if we'll have time?"  Yep.  That's my weekend.  I am a dork.

  3. Such cool picks you found. I love the modern look, but I'd have to completely redecorate to do it.

  6. Hooray for an IKEA trip! Definitely go to the one in Schaumburg, which I think is closet to you anyway. The Bolingbrook one is fine, but when it comes to the blue and yellow palace, bigger is always better. :-)

Can't wait to see what you do! The idea board looks great.

    1. Definitely hitting up the Schaumburg one. I haven't been to the Bolingbrook one but good to know it's not as big - I'd always wondered!

  11. This is like a digital version of a style board. How did you make this? Did you use Photoshop to create one image with all the items on it? I'm remodeling my house and I'll need to do one of these for each of the new spaces. Seems a lot quicker than literally cutting and pasting clipped pics to a piece of foam core. Thx.
