As my regular readers know, underneath it all, I'm a little bit crunchy.  I'm big into organic gardening, I've been a vegetarian for 24 years, and I own an eco-friendly clothing label.  I buy and eat local food as much as possible, I reuse like it's my job, and I'll take a nice, long, barefoot walk over driving in heels any day.  I'm not living in a tree house eating berries by any means, but for the most part, I prefer to go the natural route. And now that I'm pregnant, I'm even more cautious when it comes to things that I put in and on my body.

I'll be honest and tell you guys upfront that makeup was the last guest to arrive to my 'lets go natural' party.  I've admittedly known for a long time that most mainstream cosmetics contain some pretty scary chemicals, and I've always taken this into account with things like moisturizers and shampoos.  But only recently have I really made the effort to be mindful about choosing more natural makeup items.  Thankfully, it is possible to avoid cosmetics with ingredients that are harmful (both to you and to the environment) and still put on a pretty face.  My simplest advice is to look for products that contain natural ingredients (plant and herb extracts, essential oils, natural dyes, etc.), and to avoid things like parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, and triclosan.  The best part is that eliminating harsh toxic ingredients from your beauty routine will also improve your skin.  I notice a lot less irritation and breakouts when I'm faithful to chemical-free makeup.  Also, testing on animals is a deal breaker for me, and most natural cosmetic companies are cruelty-free.

The ten items above represent some of my current favorites when it comes to natural cosmetics.  As for brands, I'm especially a fan of Tarte Cosmetics, Bare Escentuals, and Josie Maran (who is also an awesome lady who has been a long-time supporter of my clothing line).  Do you have any favorite natural cosmetic products or brands?  Have any of you made your own using organic and/or fresh ingredients?

  1. I use a lot of these, too! I got a great Tarte blush/bronzer combo from Ulta and it has lasted for.ev.er. It was some kind of special promotion, but maybe they'll bring it back again around the holidays.

Hands down my favorite natural makeup is the Physicians Formula Organic Wear mascara. My eyes are sensitive and the "regular" stuff just irritates the crap out of them. I switched a couple of years ago and will never go back.

  3. Thanks for the tips. I have to admit, even though I like to go organic with everything else, I still buy the same old makeup I bought ten years ago, a mix of Body Shop and random drug store brands.... Perhaps it's time for a change!

    1. Body Shop is actually a good one too. Most of their products are toxin free. They make a grat concealer.

  6. Makeup is/was one of the last things for me to consider for my household going greener too! It's hard to give up some of those products that you've used for so long. Since my teen daughter started getting into makeup, though, I wanted to look into more natural products. I wanted her to be able to START with more natural products from the beginning. This is when I first found Madison Street Beauty on Etsy. I had always wanted to try Bare Minerals, so I gave MSB a try - and we love it. So much so that I am an affiliate with them now too! (If you want to try, contact me! *wink)
I will definitely give Josie Maran products a try (especially since I know the lady supports your awesomeness). And we love tarte! We haven't tried their mascara yet, so we'll do that too.
    Thanks for sharing, Melissa. =0)

  9. I must admit, I'm not particularly crunchy, ha ha, but it never hurts to find cosmetics without chemicals and I'm impressed to see that some brands I consider so mainstream, like Josie Maran, are in fact natural!

  14. Thanks Melissa, really like this post. I also try to use natural/organic cosmetics. Inika is probably my favourite, beautiful colours eyeshadow wise and the quality of ingredients is very high. Some Bare Minerals foundations and eyeshadows contain Bismuth Oxychloride.
