6 Ways to Detoxify Your Life

6 Ways to Detoxify Your Life
This post is in partnership with Crest. Thank you for supporting the brands that help make Bubby and Bean possible.

You guys know that I'm constantly on journeys to improve my body, mind, and spirit. I'm genuinely happy in my life and where I am right now, but I think it's important to continue to work on myself (without losing sight of how grateful I am for what I already have).  Last month I read a funny, down-to-earth BuzzFeed article called '8 Insanely Easy Ways to Detox Your Life,' and I started thinking about ways I could detoxify my own life from any negativity that might be (consciously or unconsciously) bringing me down. So I made a list of actions I could take to do just that, and got to it. Today I'm sharing what has worked for me so far, in case any of you might be thinking about doing the same.

6 Ways to Detoxify Your Life

1. Disconnect and/or delete. Putting down my phone and taking intentional breaks from social media so I can be totally present - especially when I'm with my kids - makes an immediate (and massive) difference in my headspace.  I also know quite a few people who have made huge improvements in their quality of life by deleting social media accounts. I work in social media, so I can't delete the big ones, but I have removed any smaller or so-called "up and coming" social media apps form my phone and computer.

2. Remove grumpiness and smile/laugh more. I think this one is a given, but I constantly need the reminder. It's so easy to be grumpy when you're tired, stressed, overworked, or overwhelmed. I tend to be all of these things, and I'll find myself with major RBF when I look in the mirror. I've been making a conscious effort to think of things that are happy or that I find funny so that I'm smiling and laughing throughout the day. (I've been playing with my little ones a lot too, which is always a guaranteed laugh. Kids are hilarious.)

3. Eliminate clutter. I am a messy person by nature, and I find myself surrounded by clutter on a regular basis. I've been slowly donating and throwing away things I don't need, and doing quick pick up sessions around the house each night before I go to bed. The less clutter around me, the calmer my mind becomes.

4. Stop saying yes to everything. I have, for all of my life, had an incredibly difficult time saying no - to events, to play dates, to work projects, to everything. I am slowly but surely learning that I don't have to say yes to everything (or anything). I get overwhelmed easily, and I'm finding that saying "no thank you" now and then makes my load feel a lot lighter.

5. Play more. One of the greatest ways I've found to rid my life of negative vibes is to stop constantly working (whether on my job or my house or my kids' activities or whatever I'm working on around the clock these days) and set aside some time to just play. This can mean a girls' night with my ladies, a date with my husband, or, my favorite, play time with my kids. As I mentioned in #1, a sure way to feel happy and detoxified is to just play with my babes for a while.

6. Detoxify your gums. Taking care of my mouth and detoxifying my gums is actually a pretty great metaphor for how I'm detoxifying other parts of my life, but I mean it literally! You might remember back in early January when I told you I'd started using Crest® Gum Detoxify toothpaste.  Over three months later, and I can still say it's a part of my regular daily routine. I love the fact that it goes around and even below the gum line to give me lasting gum protection, and seeks out bacteria by penetrating hard to reach places. My mouth and gums feel clean and healthy all day long. (And bonus: I had no cavities at my check up last month!) I use the Deep Clean variety, but Crest® Gum Detoxify toothpaste is also available in Extra Fresh, Gentle Whitening, Two-Step, and is available right here at Walmart as well as at other drugstores, mass retailers and eCommerce sites.

  4. Not saying yes to everything is a constant battle, I swear - I think it's something many, many women struggle with but it does feel so good when you manage to assert yourself and just say no to things you can't take on/don't want.

  6. Eliminate clutter - that is what I have been trying to do this year. Although, with 3 littles it hasn't been easy.
