Goodbye Bubby Dog, My Heart and Best Friend

Bubby and Bean will likely be vacant for a few days. We had to say goodbye to our beloved Bubby dog today after 16 years. He went downhill suddenly and unexpectedly, and was put down in his home with Robbie and I holding him. This is not a personal blog, but Bubby was the inspiration behind it. He was my muse, my son, my soulmate. I have experienced a large amount of loss with loved ones, but nothing has affected me like this. I feel like my heart died today alongside him. I was so excited for him to have one last Christmas, and I am heartbroken that he didn't. But I feel blessed in that he was given a few hours to a few weeks to live exactly 8 months ago today. He was also exactly 3 months from his birthday. I guess Bubby had a special connection to the number 22.

I can't even bring myself to turn on my computer (I am typing this on my iPhone), so I can't say for sure when I'll be back to regular posting. Right now it's hard to breathe, much less work. But I wanted to update you all since many of you have followed Bubby the Wonder Dog's story for a long time, and many of you have fallen in love with him as well. Every time I look over at his bed or see one of his toys I fall to my knees in tears. This is a great, great loss. I know one day I will look back on the wonderful memories and adventures we had together. For now, I'm just trying to make it through a 10 minute period without weeping.

Leary ("Bubby"), you were the love of my life, my greatest teacher, my angel. I am lost without you my sweet, sweet boy.

  2. I'm so sorry to hear this news. I am a new reader, but I can tell how much Bubby meant (and still means) to you. I have a dog who just turned 17 (she was originally my Grandma's dog) and so far we have been lucky that she's had only minor medical issues. I'm not looking forward to her last days, but I know they must be near...
Anywho, I wish you well, and I hope your spirits are lifted soon!

  6. I am so sorry to hear about this. I lost one of my fur babies last year, so I know what you are going through and it was one of, if not the, hardest thing I've had to go through yet. Keep strong and take care of yourself. My heart goes out to you and your family. ♥

  11. Oh my goodness, I am so so sorry. :( I know exactly how you're feeling and it's a horrible feeling. I know that our little fur babies are just that, our babies, not "pets." I am so so sorry. I will say a prayer for your little guy and one for you. <3

  12. Melissa, I am so so sorry. No words can comfort you right now, I know. They must seem empty andfall short. But I just want to add my voice to the chorus of sympathies. Like so many other followers here, I have never met you or sweet Leary, but I am so sad for you and so so sorry. Crying with you. And sending hugs.

  13. As someone who lost her "sister in dog form" years ago, I sympathize fully. I am glad that Bubby could serve as such an inspiration to you, and to those of us who read this blog. He may have passed away, but I'm sure he will always be near to you, and I hope that there's comfort in that.

  21. So very very sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Bubby. Through your brand, I sort of felt like I knew him a little bit. I am a dog owner as well and know the special and unique presence they come to be in your life. Sending hugs your way.

  23. I am sobbing reading this. I think all your readers and fans of your art would agree that we loved that dog without even knowing him. He was a symbol of rescue dogs everywhere. Bubby was a common understanding for those of us with pets who are children as much as they'd be if they were human. I feel like I knew him. He was famous all over the world. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling right now. I remember reading how excited you were that he got to have another Chrustmas. I can't think of a dog more loved or cherished by so many especially you and your husband, his mom and dad. I will be thinking of you all.

  37. In my entire life, I never met a dog owner as amazing as you or saw a bond between a human and animal like the one you and Bubby had, and will continue to have. I cannot even fathom your heartbreak right now. I know I've said this a million time over the past few days, but I am here whenever you need me. This is a huge loss to everyone who ever met that magical, magical dog.

  40. I lost a pet two years ago and it was so hard. Now I think of Sadie as the greatest cat ever and remember her as a good friend and slightly unpredictable companion. Her death was sudden and it was hard to not feel like she'd been taken too early. Now I think of the fact that we adopted her and gave her a good home for all of her remaining years. It's not the same around our house, but we think of the good times now. Rest assured, there are many, many people who understand the greatness of your loss. I wish you many laughs and happy memories between the tears!
