My Style // Summer Dreaming

Melissa of Bubby and Bean

During my college days at good old University of Wisconsin in Madison, there was an annual occurrence that took place on the first day that the temperatures hit the mid-60s.  Suddenly, groups of people would emerge from their apartments and dorm rooms wearing shorts, sundresses, and sandals, apparently unable to endure even one more moment of hiding beneath layers of midwestern winter-appropriate clothing. My friends and I used to quietly make fun of them, because really, it was just like so totally oh-em-gee ridiculous to dress like it was summer when the trees hadn't even started budding yet. Well you guys, this weekend I became one of those people.  And I am not ashamed.  At all.  It finally felt like spring here in Chicagoland, and I made the decision to take full advantage of it - sundress, sandals, bare arms, and all.  Spring just seems so late to arrive this year, and honestly, I'm already dreaming of summer.  So I dressed how I felt like dressing - for warm weather - and it was glorious.

Robbie was home this weekend, and for the first weekend in a long time there weren't any set plans or house guests or obligations.  So we decided to take a break from doing things around the house to go on a lunch date somewhere where we could sit outside, then take a walk in the sunshine.  I wore this dress from Sugarlips, which may just be the current favorite in my closet.  I am smitten with both the print and the fun asymmetrical hem, and although I was initially a little skeptical about the tie collar, once I put it on, I fell in the love with that too. I feel like this dress is a sort of amped up version of the typical festival sundress, and I have a feeling I'll be wearing it pretty incessantly over the summer months.

While I was in "let's pretend it's summer" mode, I also decided to bust out my new favorite pair of shoes, the Gentle Souls Blinque sandals from PlanetShoes.com. I was so excited to finally get to wear them when I was in Arizona, and possibly even more excited to get to wear them at home over the weekend.  It was still way too cold for them when they came in the mail back in February, but I may or may not have worn them around the house on several occasions due to an inabilitiy to resist their comfort and super chic design.  Seriously though, I love these sandals.  I feel like if I were to design the perfect sandals for my style, these would be it.

I even channeled summer through my accessories: a festival-worthy fringe purse, lots of bracelets, fun geometric earrings, and yet another one of my husband's hats (which I am frequently found wearing in the summer months when spending days outside under a hot sun).

Dress: c/o Sugarlips  //  Purse: Target  //  Sandals: Gentle Souls c/o PlanetShoes.com
Bracelets: all gifts // Earrings: c/o Roots & Feathers // Ring: Vivi Dot // Hat: stolen from husband

Anybody else dreaming of summer clothing (and possibly even wearing it just a tiny bit too early)?

  1. You look so pretty in this outfit. That dress is perfect with that asymmetrical hem and I love the way you styled it with those sandals and the hat. It was the exact same at my school, though I went to college down in Virginia which gets warm earlier and stays warm longer. That made it even worse because girls would try to sunbathe when in late March when it started to hit the low 60s lol

    1. Yes! The sun was really bright and completely washed out the pattern on the ring in the photos, so I didn't list it. But I'll add a link anyway later because you know I just adore Vivi Dot. :)

  10. true story. this is how connected we are. I picked this dress from sugarlips, and I ordered a size too small so it wouldn't zip up! I loved it but opted for the one I wore on mine today :) you look amazing in it!

It was super windy today and will be tomorrow as well. It's a hello Spring, hello ALLERGIES type of day for me. So yes, I'm really dreaming of summer right now!

  18. What a gorgeous dress! I grew up on the Canadian prairies, so I'm all too familiar with these let's pretend it's summer moments... and there's no shame in them, at some point we all just get so sick of winter and excited to wear pretty summer clothes, it happens :)
