Celebrating the Last Days of Summer

GO OUTSIDE

Although we technically have almost three weeks left, Labor Day is considered the last official day of summer here in the states.  And as sad as that makes this summer girl, I have a special place in my heart for this day, because it serves as a great reminder to me to get outside and enjoy one of the final days of the beautiful summer weather in all its glory.  Truthfully, it's been a mix of cloudy/rainy and brutally warm in the Chicago area for the last week - but I'll take gray, wet, hot days over the cold, dark, and painfully short days of winter any time.

I'm also a fan of Labor Day because of what it stands for - a day to recognize and celebrate the social and economic accomplishments and contributions of American workers by giving us a day off of work.  Admittedly, a lot of people don't get to have the day off anymore (and that's no fun), but I still appreciate the premise behind it.  As I said in my 'life lesson' post last week, making the time to enjoy life outside of work has become one of my greatest priorities.  So for those of you working, I hope that you have a little time to relax and enjoy the rest of the day once you're done.  I'm gonna miss you, summertime.

  1. Love this post. I agree. It's such a special reminder to be thankful and get outside to enjoy the last bit of summer. I love this day because it reminds me that fall is just around the corner (my fave holiday!) so it gives me a sense of anticipation :)

  3. Wishing you a wonderful labor dau long weekend, Melissa - it's a shame how few people get to enjoy the day off in this day in age, but that just means that the rest of us need to celebrate all the more!

  4. We had an amazing summer in Massachusetts with the weather! I wish I could send you some of the sunshine and warmth we are having today.

I totally agree it is important to remember what Labor Day stands for. We recently had a tri-state issue regarding a local affordable grocery store that had employees as well as its loyal customers (including myself) boycott the stores. After about 3 weeks of this, we all got what we wanted. It just goes to show that with getting together, we can still make positive changes when it comes to work in companies!

Great reflection on labour day and what it commemorates!

  8. Wonderful post and a great reminder of what Labor Day represents.
I for one am looking forward to Summer's relinquishing its rein to Autumn. This Summer has been incredibly hot with temps hover near or slightly over 100 and here in South Florida we have humidity that is almost as high as the temps. The combination can make it difficult to breath, let alone get out and exercise. :(

  9. Great post! I hate that most people are not able to celebrate properly, but luckily my husband was able to take the day off. Personally, I'm a fall kind of girl. But the summer does have its perks-swimming, canoeing, and camping. I hope that you and your family had a great holiday!
