Our Favorite Accent Chairs

Let's talk about chairs, specifically of the accent variety. We've been looking for a new one to go in our family room for about a year, something a little snugglier than the Eames knockoff I bought when we moved. (It's SO COOL, but because it's not upholstered, it does get chilly to sit on in the winter.) So while I was looking around for our house, I ALSO started a little collection of chairs that would be great in most homes, and that's what I have for you today. Amazing accent chairs for everyone to love.

By the way, I swear this blue and gray color scheme was unintentional. I was all, "La la la!" when I was clicking around and it just sort of happened. Clearly, I have a strong subconscious.

There are a lot of reasons to get googly-eyed about accent chairs. One, they provide extra seating. Two, that extra seating is flexible. Three, they can make a great a focal point in a room if you're nervous about, say, committing to a zany sofa. Four, they're on the more affordable end of the furniture spectrum. (Heck, all of the pretties above are under $350.) If I had to choose a favorite here, I think I'd go with #1, mainly because of that perfect, inky blue and the swoop of the arms. Number 5 is a close second, because again, the blue, but also because I'm a sucker for a slipper chair. They're the ultimate Versatile Seating, and you know I can't resist something that can be easily shuffled around for maximum use.

Let's take a peek at some chairs in a real space, shall we? It even fits the day's color scheme:

This room is little--it was part of Apartment Therapy's Small Cool contest this year--but the homeowners have enough seating for friends thanks to a pair of lightweight chairs. They're good for conversation or board games in this arrangement, but can easily be scooted to either side of the couch to free up floor space, maybe for a larger party. They also add some contrast against all of that dark gray; without them, I think the room would feel a little sleepy.

So, who else wants to run out and buy a new accent chair? Don't you love the flexibility of these? Which is your favorite? How cute is that dog in the room example? Hey, buddy! -Paige

Hey Santa - #2 is screaming my name, if you're listening. And shocker, it's from IKEA! 4. Great choices. #1 is my fave. But I'm holding out for one that will repel cat hair.

  5. I like #2 and #6. We don't have any room for a nice, big chair in our living room. =0(
