Houseplant Happiness: Bringing Life to the Indoors

Houseplant Happiness: Bringing Life to the Indoors (via Bubby and Bean)

Despite the fact that my mother's green thumb was not passed down to me, my skills at keeping houseplants alive has (somewhat) improved in the last couple of years. And thank goodness, because adding some green to our indoor spaces has not only been a really great way to liven up our decor, it's also a huge part of what keeps me from legitimately losing my mind during the winter months. Houseplants (literally) bring life to a room, and decorating with them may just be the easiest way ever to make a home feel instantly put together. Filling up rooms with greenery has become something of a trend over the past couple of years (I mean, how many indoor succulents, cacti, and fiddle leaf figs did you see on Pinterest in 2014?), but it's a trend in which I feel okay about investing. (Because really, how could houseplants ever go out of style?)

I don't really do decoration goals, but I did recently mention to my husband that I'd like every room in our place to have at least a couple of houseplants this year. The spaces above have been providing inspiration and ideas for me, so I thought I'd share them with you guys as well. I think that last one is my favorite. I love the idea of walking into my living room and feeling like I'm in a forest.

Who else finds happiness in houseplants? And where in Chicagoland can I find some reasonably priced split leaf philodendrons (I want big ones)?

  1. I love houseplants, but the cats seem to think they are snacks. But that last picture is amazing. I would love to have plants that look that great.

  2. I don't have a green thumb either. It surprises me each time one of my orchids actually starts to bloom :) Also, living with cats I have to be careful what type of plant to keep in the house!

  3. I'm exactly the same. Over the years I became better at keeping houseplants alive. :) And I love them so much. They make every home instantly... well.. nicer... kind of "fresher/lighter"-looking. If you know what I mean. Haha :)

  5. I don't have a green thumb, either, so it's fake plants for me! I saw some gorgeous ones at HomeGoods yesterday when I was browsing for a client. Also know that I appreciate the great bench/table action happening in these pictures. :-)

  6. These are all such fabulous insp, Melissa! The one thing I can't wait to do is add houseplants to our new place when we move!! That first pic is especially perf, and yes, me too... definitley getting better with my green thumb. Also, choosing plants that are hard to kill helps! ;)

  7. The inspirations look so beautiful! Sadly, I can kill pretty much any plant you throw at me, even the ones that are supposed to be sturdy and withstand any abuse... maybe I'll get better at taking when of them when I'm a bit more grown up...? Who knows when that might be, though!

  8. I am a serial plant killer. I have one "Christmas Cactus" that has survived me for a few years...maybe I need to go the succulent route?

  9. My houseplants were doing really well until this winter, and some of them have sadly started to not look so great. I'm planning on getting some new ones this spring. It's so hard to find the ones I like in our area for some reason. I ordered small ones online last time, which grew huge after a couple years, but I'd really prefer to buy in person this time around.

  10. Luckily Jesse keeps ours alive :) We have 3 in the kitchen and like 10 in the living room! I would like to add some to my studio...but then I have to keep them alive...lol!

  11. My brother once told me all my house plants looked like candidates for Last Rites. (He's brutally honest.) I've killed cactus. But I'm doing better. I have an African violet that is blooming, and two succulents that appear to be surviving, if not thriving in pots hand-painted by grandsons. Plants bring life to a room.
