What I'm Wearing Now: March

What I'm Wearing Now: March // Bubby and Bean
1. Dreamy Daze Print Dress, Free People  //  2. Cropped Denim Jacket, Ann Taylor brand (thrifted years ago for $3; love this almost identical version from Madewell)  //  3. Floppy Black Hat, H&M  // 4. Sterling Necklace with 'Mom' and 'E' Charms, Helen Ficalora  //  5. Anthem Tank in Whiten, Madewell  //  6. Cream Printed Kimono (bought last summer; love this similar one from She Inside)  //  7. Charlie Diaper Bag, Timi + Leslie (still going strong after 15 months of daily use!)  //  8. Denim Cut-offs (DIYed; way into this similar pair from Rag & Bone)  //  9. Mossimo Bailey Footbed Sandals in White, Target  //  10. Thunderbird II Moccasins in Brown, Minnetonka  //  11. Border Print Wide Leg Soft Pants (you might recognize these from my music fest roundup last week), Joe B

Yes, I'm posting this month's edition of What I'm Wearing Now on the very last day of March. So I suppose it's not technically what I'm wearing now as much as what I already wore this month. To be fair, we just got back from vacation a few days ago, and I was making an effort to stay away from the computer while I was away. So there's my excuse. For those news to this series (now in its third month), the motivation behind it was mainly in response to our beginning-of-year reader survey, where many commented that they missed seeing outfit posts - which have admittedly dwindled down to once every couples of months since I had Essley. In an effort to share what I'm wearing at the moment without relying exclusively on my inconsistent outfit posts, I decided that I'd put together a monthly round-up collage featuring some of the clothing and accessory items (or the most similar pieces I can find, if certain items are sold out, old, or thrifted/vintage) that I'm wearing the most that particular month.

March was a unique month, both because the weather dramatically changed mid-month (we had a 75 degree day on the16th; awesomely bizarre for Chicago in March), and because I spent a third of the month in Arizona. So while January and February were all about heavy layers, boots, and hats, this month meant mostly lightweight dresses, flowy pants, kimonos, denim cut-offs, sun hats, and sandals. I know it's a thing for bloggers to favor fall and even winter when it comes to fashion, but I'm a spring and summer style girl through and through. So these types of pieces are my favorites, and it was a treat to pull them out of my closet for a few. It's funny because next month's What I'm Wearing Now will likely be focused on much cooler weather clothing than you see here (or at least more jackets and layers). It will probably feel like backtracking from the pieces that I've been wearing the last few weeks. Underneath my April layers though, I'll be secretly counting down the days until I can bust out these summery styles again.

Believe it or not, there will actually be a couple of real live outfit posts coming in the next couple of weeks as well. I took advantage of the insanely gorgeous weather and stunning surroundings in Arizona to snap some shots of my favorite outfits there. So stay tuned.

What type of clothing and accessory pieces have you been wearing most this month?

Life Lately, In Snapshots // The Early Spring Edition

Life Lately, In Snapshots // The Early Spring Edition
1. robbie wasn't home much the first quarter of the year, but when he was, these two were inseparable.  //  2. loved this sunny sunday morning in scottsdale. //  3. packing for arizona got me stoked for warm weather clothes.  //  4. super bowl sunday brought the biggest snowstorm of the season, so we took advantage.  //   5. essley and her buddy grayson had lots of dance parties  //  6. the arizona sunsets were breathtaking, every night we were there.  //  7.  fresh citrus fruits got my pumped for summer.  //  8. essley and i rocked the handmade valentines.  //  9. butterfly wonderland in scottsdale was magical //  10. we took essley to shedd aquarium and girlfriend was mesmorized.  // 11. discovered this beautiful winter-kissed road while driving around one day while essley slept.  //  12. had some great hang time with my furry niece in indianapolis.  // 13. the first park day of the year was a success. // 14. designed some new cards for the shop.  //  15. was infatuated with this wall of hot sauces at the international food store in indianapolis.  //  16. discovered one final patch of snow while out on a run; said 'beat it' out loud.

The blog has been full of inspiration type design/home/fashion roundup posts lately without much personal content, so it felt like the perfect time for a 'Life Lately' update. These posts seem to only happen a handful of times a year now that Instagram is my go-to for sharing pieces of my life, but as I've mentioned before, I really do enjoy putting them together from time to time. It forces me (in a good way) to take a few minutes to sit down and look back over the previous months. People always say that as you get older, time passes more quickly. And at least for me, I think they're right. It's good to intentionally reflect every now and then, and these posts allow me to do that. (And also share a little more about the real live person behind this blog!)

These last couple of months have a mix of extremes - a lot of time spent indoors hiding from freezing temps in late January and February followed by endless outdoor activities centered around hot weather and sunshine in March. (There are a couple of shots above from our time spent in Arizona this month - I'll share more details and pictures from that trip later this week.) It's been that strange time when my least favorite part of the year transitions into my favorite, when grey skies and lifeless trees and short days begin to be replaced by color and budding flowers and later sunsets. It's kind of cool to look back over these photos and see how this time of year is represented through them.

As always, you can view more peeks of what I'm up to on the daily over here. So what about you? What have you been up to during this winter to spring transition time of year?

Music Festival Style: What to Pack

What to Pack for Music Festivals (via Bubby and Bean
1. Challis Romper, S.O. Rad  //  2. Arrow Backpack, Mudd  //  3. Silver Tone Turquoise Cobochan Ring  //  4. Aztec Floppy Hat, Apt 9  //  5. Stacked Cat's-Eye Sunglasses, LC Lauren Conrad  //  6. Jersey Kimono,  Mudd  //  7. Women's Slip-On Footbed Sandals, Mudd  //  8. Tribal Jumpsuit, City Triangles  //  9. Hannah Women's Triple Buckle Ankle Boots, Muk Luks  //  10. Santa Fe Beaded Moccasins, Durango  //  11. Stick, Arrow & Triangle Earring & Ear Cuff Set, Mudd //  12. Border Print Wide Leg Soft Pants, Joe B  //  13. Gold Tone Simulated Drusy Teardrop Stretch Ring, GS by Gemma Simone   //  14. Emmy Fringe Crossbody Bag, Mudd  //  15. Destructed High Waist Denim Shorts, Mudd  // 16. Ramones Tee, Rock & Republic

Those of you who are regular readers likely know by now that summer music festivals have been a big part of my life for a long time. I initially started my clothing line by vending at festivals (I exhibited at the first eight Bonnaroos, among many others), I produced the eco-fashion shows for Rothbury Festival (now Electric Forest), and I've attended many other festivals for fun along the way (Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits are my current favorites). My husband's career also has him working music festivals throughout the county all spring and summer long. Essley attended her first festival in 2013, in utero. It sounds a little cheesy, but we are truly a festival family.

Coachella begins two weeks from today, which means festival season has officially arrived. And although I'm (sadly) not going to be attending, I still have it - and music festivals in general - on my mind. So today I thought it would be fun to share some examples of the types of clothing and accessory items I recommend packing for fests this summer, as shown above. The biggest thing I've learned about festival packing over the years is to focus on pieces you can layer, because regardless of where you are geographically, the weather can change at any time. The same thing goes for shoes - pack a few pairs of different types of shoes, from sandals to boots. Make sure to include your favorite pair of denim cut-offs, a great music-inspired tee, a pair of flowy pants, a couple of lightweight dresses/rompers, and a kimono or cardigan. And don't forget the accessories - a big floppy hat and sunglasses can instantly make an outfit cool (and also protect you from the sun). I also suggest keeping comfort in mind - you're going to be doing a lot of walking and dancing! As for style, my rule of thumb for festival fashion is simple: wear what you love to wear. I gravitate toward more boho items which tend to be big at festivals anyway, but the key is showcasing your personal style, regardless of what that might be.

All of the goodies in the collage above can be found at Kohls.com or in Kohls stores. I just picked up #s 6, 12, 15, and 16 and am stoked to wear them at my first music fest of the summer in May. And stay tuned for a festival season What to Wear coming in a couple of weeks!

Are you a music festival goer? What types of clothing and accessories do you pack for fests? What are your favorites from the pieces here?

GIVEAWAY // Win A Sterling Silver Charm Necklace from Helen Ficalora!

GIVEAWAY // Win A Sterling Silver Charm Necklace from Helen Ficalora and Bubby & Bean!

I was recently introduced to Helen Ficalora's jewelry designs, and I instantly fell in love. In fact, I can be found wearing one of her necklaces with a sterling silver Mom charm and 'E' charm (for Essley) almost everyday. Her work is timeless and personal - and she has a great business story too. She started her line inside her family beach motel in Montauk, New York, and became the pioneer of the alphabet-charm craze. Over the past decade, her business has grown to include hundreds of beautiful, timeless styles that have become a favorite among celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Julianne Moore, and Tina Fey. Pretty cool.

Mother's Day is only a little over a month away, and Helen Ficalora line just released a brand new collection celebrating how mothers and grandmothers bring sunshine into our lives. The inspiration for the new designs comes from the beautiful transformation of the seasons from spring to summer. As the earth around us is blooming and new life is being created, we remember and appreciate our mothers and the life and love they have given us. (I love this!) Helen's Mother's Day collection is available in yellow, pink, and white 14k gold with select pieces also available in sterling silver. The prices range from $55-$250, and can be found at helenficalora.com and in select Bloomingdales stores.

And here's some really great news: We're teaming up with Helen Ficalora to give away one of her gorgeous necklaces! One lucky Bubby and Bean reader will receive an 18 inch fine sterling silver necklace with your choice of solid sterling silver alphabet charm or a solid sterling silver Mom disk charm (perfect for you mamas or as a Mother's Day gift!), a $95 value. Getting Organized: Why I Love Baskets

Getting Organized with Baskets // Bubby and Bean

When I was growing up, my mom used baskets for everything. I mean everything. Fruit was displayed in baskets. Magazines were organized in baskets. Our toys were kept in baskets. Even toilet paper was stored in pretty baskets in our bathrooms. I'll admit that I thought it was a little weird as a kid, but as an adult, I get it. I really get it. Our house always looked beautiful, and I genuinely think that her creative use of baskets for everyday items was a big part of it. It felt organized, but not in a bland, sterile way. It was artistic, a little eclectic, and really quite lovely.

Speaking of organization (or lack thereof), over the past year, the space that was once our living room (ha) has slowly morphed into a giant toy box for Essley's ever mounting collection of stuffed animals, books, puzzles, and dolls. (The kid is the first grandkid on my side of the family. People like to give her things. A lot of things.) And although we do try to keep her belongings in her bedroom and teach her (as best as you can teach a 14 month old) to tidy up after herself, the reality of the situation is that she tends to play in the living room during the day, which means toys end up collecting there at a rapid pace.

I started thinking the other day, as I watched Essley dump a massive container of Legos out onto the floor, about my mom's basket collection. I suddenly felt inspired to take action myself. I turned to one of my favorite brands, West Elm, and started basket hunting. And you guys - I found so much goodness. Ideally, I'd like a mix of sizes and types to use throughout the downstairs - for Essley's toys, yes, but to organize other things as well. The pieces you see above are my favorites. I'm especially eyeing #1, #5, and #6. They're very different styles but I think they'd look so cool mixed together in the same space.

Do you use baskets for storage and decorating in your home? Which one from the examples above is your favorite?

This post is in partnership with West Elm.

Our Favorite (Affordable!) Large Art Pieces

By Home Contributor Paige Ronchetti
Our Favorite (Affordable!) Large Art Pieces // Bubby and Bean
left: top // middle // bottom                   right: top // middle // bottom

We've been in our house long enough (2.5 years) that I've collected a nice little hoard of smaller artwork, but now I need some big kahunas to make a statement. And anybody who's ever wanted to buy something larger than an 8x10 knows that art can get a wee bit expensive. I'm pining after a sassy abstract cow for our dining room--which is now on backorder, ugh--but we still need some sizable pieces for a few other places. I bet I'm not the only one in this boat, so today I shouldered the burden of research and found some lovely artwork on the bigger side (at least 16x20) that will set you back less than $100.

Side note: you can always DIY your own big ol' artwork, but sometimes I just like to buy something and be done with it, ya know?

If you're really looking to save money or need something totally huge, embrace a poster. If you put it in a real frame with a mat, it will be nothing like what you had on your walls in high school. (We have two vintage travel posters in the family room and they look very snazzy thanks to nice frames.) Another tip is to see if an artist you like sells print versions of their original paintings. Several of these are from Etsy or Society6, both of which are great places to poke around for prints and photography. The prices will vary a bit from shop to shop, but for the most part, deals abound.

Ready to see why I'm all up in your business about large art today?

Boosh! Something smaller could still go there, I suppose, but it wouldn't have the same impact as this trio does. Using something that fills up more of the wall actually makes the space look bigger, which is always a plus.

Where do you like to buy big artwork? Have you ever made your own? What's your favorite piece here? - Paige

I love everything about this post, but the best part is the Grand Canyon print above - not just because I'm smitten with it (I am, so much), but also because as you're reading this, I'm literally at the Grand Canyon. And neither Paige nor I planned this. Bubby and Bean team psychic connections are strong. In addition to writing for Bubby and Bean as our Home Contributor, Paige works as an Interior Designer (check out her biz, The Room Kit) and blogs over at Little Nostalgia. You can also find her on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram

Arizona Bound + A Little Cactus Love

Today we hop on a plane and head southwest for ten glorious days in the Arizona sunshine. Aside from my quick two-day trip to Atlanta over the new year and a couple of road trips to Indianapolis, this will be the first time in 2015 that I'm really traveling - which feels a little strange to this travel junkie. I can't tell you guys how ready I am to get away for a few. This marks the fourth year in a row that we take this trip, and the second year that Essley comes along. She was only ten weeks old last year and I don't think she quite got it, but this year, I know she's going to be stoked. Essley and I will be hanging in Scottsdale for a few days, and then Robbie will join us there on Sunday, after the band's nearly three month winter tour comes to an end. We're going to the Grand Canyon for a couple of days next week and I think I'm most excited about that - for the chance to just be, surrounded by nature and away from the city. And of course, I can't wait for the weather. It's admittedly been pretty great weather here the past few days, but consistent sunshine and warm desert air is basically all I can think about.

I've been working around the clock for the last couple of weeks, pretty much every waking minute when I've had help with Essley and when she's slept, so that I won't have to work much while I'm gone. I decided that this year, I want to be able to spend as much time as possible outside, and not have to worry about devoting several hours a day to time inside in front of my computer. It feels good to be not only caught up, but ahead of schedule (which never happens - like, never). I'm mentally a little exhausted, but I'm confident it will be worth it once I'm there and able to give my brain a break. The art/card shop will be closed this week and most of next, but there will still be regular posts here on the blog, almost everyday, as usual. And I'm sure I'll be excessively posting like a crazy person over on Instagram (@bubbyandbean). Sunshine and cacti after a midwest winter will do that to you.

And speaking of cacti, how 'bout those gorgeous pictures above? They got me super pumped for the trip. I hope they inspire you as well.

Let's Talk Bed Linens

1. Circle Dot Sheet Set, Urban Outfitters  //  2. Nomad Sheet Set, Anthropologie  //  3. Organic Cotton Sheets, John Lewis  //  4. Natural Patchwork Cotton Rich Sheet Set, Next  //  5. Organic Grey Percale Sheet Set, CB2  //  6. White Palazzo Bed Linens, Yorkshire Linen  //  7. Polka Dot Sheet Set, West Elm  //  8. Paoletti Oxford Embroidered Sheet Set, Bedding World

You guys may remember when I posted some pictures of especially cozy looking beds last month (on a day that I was feeling particularly sleepy, I might add). Ever since I wrote that post, I've become acutely aware of the fact that our bed sheets are in need of a major upgrade. We own two sets, they're exactly the same, and they're both rather pathetically worn out. (One set may or may not even have a couple of holes.) Needless to say, I've been on the lookout for some new bed linens in which to invest, and the ones you see above represent some of my favorites so far. I'm looking for something simple and pretty (and preferably in white or grey), but most importantly, soft and comfortable. Yorkshire Linen have palazzo bed linens that sound all sorts of luxurious (hello 1000 thread count).  I also discovered a brand called John Lewis that carries organic sheets sets (and really pretty duvets).  And I'm not usually a pattern person when it comes to sheets, but I'm also really into this patchwork patterned set from Next and these circle dot sheets from UO.

What kind of sheets do you use? Do you invest in high quality sheets that will last longer, or do you switch prefer less expensive linens that you can switch out more often? Any brands you recommend?

Hip Mom, Smart Mom, Stylish Mom: Jessica Murnane

Bubby & Bean's Hip Mom Series: Jessica Murnane

It's time for another post in our 'Hip Mom, Smart Mom, Stylish Mom' series, and I couldn't be more excited about this one. Before I introduce you to our current hip mama, here's a little recap of what this is all about. When I was pregnant, I thought a lot about what kind of changes would take place in me after the baby arrived, and if it would be difficult to maintain my individual identity and style. I knew that I absolutely wanted Essley to come first, without question - but I also knew that it was important to continue to stay true to who I was, and to continue to enjoy the things that made me ME, pre-baby. Well despite much less sleep and free time, a consistently messy home, and a wardrobe that is rarely wrinkle-free or truly clean, I can honestly say that I at least make a conscious effort to be somewhat stylish, to create a relatively healthy balance between work/family/life, and to remind myself that it's neither necessary nor appealing for me to fit into the mold of the stereotypical, traditional mom. I'm lucky to know (and constantly meet) other moms who feel the same way that I do. These women are committed mothers who defy convention. They are true to their kids and true to their families, but also true to themselves. These moms are hip, smart, and stylish - and I'm thrilled to be able to share, in their words, what makes them that way.

For the fifth post in this series, I'm stoked to be featuring a truly inspiring lady named Jessica who I initially discovered online a couple of years ago, then proceeded to basically stalk (because she's just that rad), then asked to share some of her incredible plant-based recipes on Bubby and Bean. (You can check out her recipe contributions here: Vegan Cherry Brownies, Sun-Dried Tomato and Cashew Cheese Stuffing, and Lentil, Root Vegetable, and Arugula Salad.) She is a designer and wellness advocate, the creator of the JessicaMurnane.com, and the voice behind the super inspiring podcast One Part Podcast. She also recently released her new digital cookbook, A Year Of Breakfast (so, so good). Jessica is dedicated to helping the world find a happier and healthier way of living - one step at a time - by encouraging positive and incremental changes in the way we eat, think, live, and love. She's also a new mom to one of the most adorable babies ever named Sid. Welcome the hip, smart, and stylish Jessica Murnane.

Welcome Jessica! Let's start out by having you define your style. You get three words.

Layered Witchy Flow

What is different (if anything) about your style/wardrobe now than before your became a mom?

I feel like it hasn’t changed much! I didn’t give birth, so I never had to go from regular clothes to maternity clothes to post-pregnancy clothes. It’s all my same gear as before Sid came home…lots of black, flowy patterns, and hats. But I will say that I have to change my clothes more during the day. Haven’t mastered the dodge-the-baby-puke move quite yet.

As a work at home mom, what is your usual daily 'uniform?'

My daily uniform working from home is usually black pants of some kind, a flowy/drapey thing on top, and a good pair of comfy socks. Although, on days that I don’t have to leave the house for meetings, you’ll find me in a giant Mrs.Roper caftan-style robey thing.

What do you wear when you go out with your husband or girlfriends? Are your outfits different or the same as when you're hanging with your little one?

The weird thing is I pretty much only have one set of clothes that I wear to everything. They aren't too dressy and they aren't too casual. You won't ever find me in yoga pants and tennis shoes (unless I’m working out), but you won't find me in a super dressy clothes either. Which has created some problems in the past when a. Someone wants me to go hiking or b. I have a fancy party. I probably need a better range of clothes!

What are your top three wardrobe staples?

Some form of bootie (high or low), something leopard (pants, jacket, shoes), and an awesome hat (and it’s gotta be an Optimo).

What are your favorite places to shop for clothing that you'd suggest to other hip/smart/stylish moms?

Shit. When I find the place, I will tell you. I have the hardest time finding clothes! Whenever I say this to my friends, they say "but you have lots of clothes". I really don't. I'm just good at mixing it up. I'll find a piece I like once or twice a year and then just wear it in different ways. I try to buy solid pieces that aren’t too trendy and know will look good forever. I haven't bought anything new in so long and still on the hunt for something new. But in baller mom dream world…I'd buy all Lanvin and zero + maria cornejo.

What are your favorite places to shop for baby and/or kids clothes?

I love Monica & Andy for basics. They have the best stuff and it’s all organic and minus all the weird chemicals that they put in kid’s fabrics. I have a boy and even though I love patterns and playful things, I like to dress him pretty classic - solids and stripes. But if I had a girl, I would dress her in Mini Rodini and Mara Hoffman all day long.

How do you 'balance' everything you have going on (work, kids, family, life!) while still keeping a sense of style?

I feel like even before Sid, I was always working on balance. It’s always a work in progress for me.Having him in my life has forced me to prioritize a bit...which is a good thing. I tend to say “yes!” to everything, even if I really don’t have time to fit it in. Now I consider - Do I really want to do this? Is this a good move for my brand? A lot of times the answer is no, so I’ve started saying that more. It feels kind of good. This winter was pretty brutal for me. It kind of messed me up a little in terms of focus and balance - so I decided to do a deep dive into a Ayurvedic 30-day cleanse through the Hamsa Center in Chicago. I’ve never done anything like this before and excited to see where it takes me. For me it’s less about changing my diet through the cleanse (I already eat lots of good stuff) and more about learning to meditate and truly take care of myself. I’m starting tomorrow! I’ll let you know how it goes.

What is your ultimate favorite thing to do with your family when you have some downtime?

Does doing nothing count? Ever since Sid came home it has been a constant flood of visitors, travel to see family, and commitments. Which has been a lot of fun and would never take back those special visits. But it can get a little draining after awhile. It just feels so good to lay in bed together without a single thing to do all day but read books, sing, and eat really good food.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I would! Thank you. Ever since I’ve become a mom, I’m always surprised about the negativity I get from other women/moms. One of the first questions you get is “oh god, how are you sleeping?” or “just wait until he (insert negative thing here)”. I think sometimes it’s just small talk and easy things to say. But I’ve loved being a mom so far and want to share the positive things too! So, maybe instead we start asking one another our favorite part of being a mom or things that bring us joy. We don’t have to be fake about it and if shit is really going down and you need a shoulder - let’s talk about it. But let’s also not automatically jump to something negative. It gets a little repetitive and boring. I think you do a great job of this on this site - being open and honest about motherhood, but also showing that it’s pretty damn fun too. Thanks for having me!

You rock so hard, Jessica. Thank you again for being a part of this series and continuing to be an inspiration to moms/women/people in general! Make sure you guys check out Jessica's website, and her podcast (it will be your new favorite). You can also find her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
