friday is for favorites

Cool Retro Gear from RetroPlanet.com

Time for another edition of Friday is for Favorites!  For new readers, 'Friday is for Favorites' is my (almost) weekly series where I become a rebel, and break all of my own rules of design cohesiveness to which I normally adhere on the Bubby and Bean blog.  No themes, trend collections, or matching aesthetics here.  Just a gathering of a few random things that I happen to be loving this particular week.

1. This absolutely gorgeous photo by Nicole Wu is proof that a messy braid with some tiny white wildflowers woven into it is pretty much the chicest hairstyle one could possibly sport this summer.  At least in my eyes.

2. Be honest - would it be excessively weird if I packed a peanut butter sandwich and apple in this awesome geometric print lunch bag from ModCloth, just to carry it upstairs to my home office?  Because I think I'm gonna.

3. Those of you who are old like me will remember watching film strips in elementary school, and the endless entertainment that was provided by projecting hand shadow puppets on the screen when the film strip ran out.  This poster by Miss Quite Contrary on Etsy is exactly what I need to recreate such shadow puppets on my living room wall.  (Incredibly immature for my age, and proud of it.)

4. Have you guys seen the latest lookbook from ShopRuche.com?  It's called "The Tuscan Sun," and it basically makes me want to pack a suitcase full of floral, summery dresses and hop the first plane to Italy.  It's full of pretty, feminine clothing and colorful jewelry, and set among lush, tree-filled landscapes that naturally beckon super romantic things like picnics with freshly baked bread and homemade sangria and mason jars filled with wildflowers. Sigh.

5. These images are part of an editorial called "Silent Spring" from a Serbian magazine called FAAR.  They are equal parts gorgeous and strange, and that is why I love them.

6. I'm not entirely sure why, but I've been having an overwhelming urge to have a full-on summertime backyard barbecue party, complete with veggie dogs and watermelon and lemonade and canned beer and s'mores.  Also, I'd like to incorporate a checkered table cloth and this retro-style Barbecue Condiment Set, and maybe some cool hanging lights and, like, sparklers and stuff.  Never mind that I don't have a backyard and could probably only squeeze about 8 people onto my back deck (if we completely removed the table and chairs) - I will make this happen.  Mark my words.

7. Sunday is Father's Day, so of course my papa john made the list of favorites this week, duh!  Really though, he is a rad guy who undoubtedly deserved the "coolest dad" title that my friends awarded him when we were growing up.  When my sister and I were little girls, he used to do things for us that I don't think I truly fully appreciated until I became an adult myself.  These things include but are not limited to going for "nature walks" to look for interesting rocks and big trees, making pinhole cameras and developing the film ourselves in his darkroom, bringing home rolls of printing paper from work so massive that we could trace our entire bodies and color them in accordingly, and having "music afternoons" full of Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan records.  This is one of my favorite pictures of him, taken from the catalog of a knitwear company called Perennial Designs in the '70s.  I think it's a pretty amazing picture, but the best part of it is his reaction (rolling of the eyes/flushing of the cheeks) when I remind him that he once modeled.  Pretty priceless.

Any fun plans this weekend?  One of my oldest and bestest buddies and his girlfriend are coming into town tonight, and we're going to go out to a fancy (or not-so-fancy) dinner, followed by participation in general mayhem throughout the city.  They leave tomorrow afternoon, and I'm thinking tomorrow night will be a nice relaxed evening on the couch (ie recovering from the previous night).  On Sunday afternoon/evening, we're going to head out to my dad's for Father's Day and will likely have a casual outdoor dinner or something equally chill.  (My dad's not in to big productions.  He completely forgot it was Father's Day this weekend until I reminded him yesterday, and his response was a semi-annoyed groan/sigh.  That's my pops.) I'm also hoping that on Sunday morning, Robbie and I can hit up an estate sale, go get some veggies from our favorite local farm, or go take some pictures somewhere.  It's been a while since we've both been in town on the same weekend, and I've been missing our dorky weekend day-date adventures.  Even though the band has been on the road much less frequently over the last 6 weeks, we've both been so busy that it's been a challenge to find any real hang time for the just the two of us.  I'm ready.

I hope that your Friday is especially awesome, and that your weekend is even better.

  4. I'm a big Tim Burton fan, so I totally understand the allure of "creepy."

We have a pretty jam-packed weekend, getting together with both sets of parents to celebrate and hopefully venturing to IKEA (though it's for my sister and not us... yet).

    1. I LOVE going to IKEA. It's like an amusement park for people who love design. I even like the Swedish cafeteria food.

  5. Thanks Kara! I'm not sure if it still exists... It was based out of Bloomington, Indiana and I know it was one of the first sustainable clothing companies.
