Our Favorite Area Rugs (All Under $350)

By Home Contributor Paige Ronchetti

Rugs! I love them so. Part of why I'm so drawn to hardwood flooring is because of the rug factor. If it were up to me and I had endless funds to make this a reality, our house would be all hardwood, all the time. Rugs would be everywhere, being so chic and interesting underfoot -- not to mention adding a cozy element to the room, which is nice now that the nights are cooling off. (Don't despair if you're renting and are trapped in a hideous carpet prison; you can totally put an area rug over carpet, too. I'm just telling you about my imaginary life in which I can change my floors willy-nilly.)

I speak of endless funds in my hardwood fantasy because not only is the flooring itself kind of pricey, but rugs are the same way. We bought a couple of them for this house and because one of them was a giant 8'x10', I had to wait around for stuff to go on sale. (Which ended up being fine because I love you forever, striped rug.) Most folks don't need one that big, so today I did a little poking around the interwebs and found some fabulous 5'x8' options for under $350 -- and that's on the high side; several of them are under $200.

To illustrate how delightful an area rug can be, take a gander at this living room:

Now imagine how it would look if the rug weren't there. Still great, obviously, but I think it acts like a connecting thread for a lot of the colorful accents in the room. It just makes the space feel complete.

Are you an area rug fan? Which of these is your favorite? Have you ever done the area-rug-over-carpet trick? - Paige
Thanks Paige for this seriously gorgeous rug round-up.  (Now if I could just stop obsessing over #2 and focus on my work for the day. Sigh.) 1. Great choices here! The top grey one would look great in my studio (still searching btw). Too bad they don't deliver outside USA ;-)

  2. I love all the patterns you featured here Paige! I was so lucky and found a great rug (pink even!) at Target for $50! And it seems to be holding up well too. I have it in front of my sink area, where I stand pretty much every day and it still looks nice.

  3. That second to last one would look mighty fine in my living room. I'm in full agreement that an area rug can transform a room.

  4. I love both one and two so much and yes, I have area rugs over carpet in several rooms in my house. It's a great way to change the look of a room without remodeling work! =)

  5. I'm a hardwood girl all the way - especially if it's parquet. I don't care if it gets cold in the winter, if I had wooden floors at home, I'd never put anything over top of them that might hide their beauty. No matter how tempting printed rugs can be ;)

  7. Love the rugs! They sure don't make them as boring as they were back when I had wood floors. I was trying to picture that room without the rug, and I can see what a difference it makes. Nice big rugs add so much interest and warmth to a room.

  8. I LOVE rugs! But I'm also really frugal so I wait for sales, thrift stores, and other places to get all of my rugs super cheap. All of the rugs here are great. My favorite is the second one at the top!
