My Style // Patterns and Pops

Patterns and Pops // Bubby and Bean
Patterns and Pops // Bubby and Bean

Over the weekend, a few of us decided to grab lunch then go take some photos at a local forest preserve. I was wearing my very favorite dress and favorite new flats, and as I walked out the door, I grabbed a recently received pretty patterned tote to use as a purse.  As we headed to lunch, I had a moment of dresser's remorse, thinking that the patterns of the dress and tote together might be overkill.  (Why yes, I do over-think everything.  How did you know?)  Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that I was actually quite fond of the two patterns together, especially against the solid orange shoes - and once again, all was right in the world.  I have a thing for patterns in neutral or muted shades paired with pops of bold color.  (Hence the 'patterns and pops' subject for this post.)

The forest preserve, along with many acres of fields and woods, includes a really rad old, abandoned barn and a perfectly preserved one-room school house.  This was probably the first time I've ever been there without wearing shorts and hiking shoes, but it was actually fun for us all to walk around in nature feeling a little dressed up.

In addition to the fact that this carry-all tote (called the Mint & Grey Rope Tote) is equal parts cute and handy (I like big bags and I cannot lie...), it was also ethically produced, which makes my level of adoration for it increase exponentially.  The quality is unsurpassed, and the hand loomed ikat fabric is beyond gorgeous.  If you haven't yet heard of Hearts, the company who makes the bag (along with lots of other beautiful accessories and jewelry), I highly recommend checking them out.  They support quality of life for more than 2,000 artisans around the globe, ensuring that each person involved in the production cycle receives fair wages and safe working conditions.  Pretty cool. (Pssst... They're also giving Bubby and Bean readers 30% off with code BUBBY30!)

Blowish Paloma Shoes

And how about these shoes?  You guys already know that I'm a long-time fan of Blowfish, and these Paloma Flats may just officially be my new favorite flats.  I broke out of my usual boho-ish shoe habit with these bold beauties, and I'm so glad I did.  I love the textured fabric and the fact that the bow is elegant without being too girly.  They're the perfect flats for short summer dresses, and will be great with tights once fall rolls around too.

The dress (which I also wore here last year) is my absolute favorite garment in my entire closet.  I bought it about a year and a half ago at a Target in Indianapolis for all of $25, and I would venture to say that I've worn it at least 30-40 times since.  Honestly.  I love the print, I love the cut, and I love the fit.  I can't tell you guys how many times I have purchased a piece of clothing that I wasn't so sure about initially, only to have it end up being one of my most treasured wardrobe staples.  Funny how that works.

What are you thoughts on mixing patterns and throwing in pops of bright colors when it comes to your outfits?  Too much or just right?

My Style // Hello, Blossom

I will confess that I had a moment while wearing this outfit where I felt suddenly overwhelmed with the fact that I was just a little too close to channeling my inner Blossom.  (Those of you too young to get this reference, I'm sorry.)  The floral dress, the denim jacket, the hat - there was a whole lotta 1990s going on with this ensemble.  Ultimately though, I was okay with this, because I felt all sorts of playful and summery and free while wearing it.  I really did.  Beside the fact that florals have made yet another big comeback, if you're going to take a walk in the park (which was literally what I did), I think having a little Blossom-style energy might just be the best way to do it.

I've actually had this dress for a couple of years now.  I picked it up for $5 at a thrift store, wore it once, and then it somehow had the unfortunate fate of becoming buried in the depths of my closet for two years.  A few days ago, while looking for a completely different dress, I saw a corner of pink and purple floral fabric peering out from behind my motorcycle jacket.  And there it was.  It's got a nice drape, the fabric is soft, and it's very summery.  Now that I've saved it from the closet abyss, I'm looking forward to wearing it a lot over the next few months.

Speaking of things I'll be wearing a lot this summer, can I just say how much I adore my new Delmar Sandals from Blowfish?  I've wanted a great pair of metallic sandals for a while now, and as soon as I saw these, I knew they were the ones.  I think that the key to incorporating metallic fabric into accessories is pairing it with a clean, streamlined design.  These shoes are the ideal example of this - they're simple and comfortable, and they have the perfect amount of sparkle.  They'd do just as well with a dressier nighttime look as they do with this casual day dress.

Despite the crazy floral-ness going on with this dress's print, the cut is simple enough that I felt inclined to pile on lots of jewelry.  I'll take any excuse I can get to wear one of my beloved Roots & Feathers necklaces.  And the delicate turquoise necklace (made by the wonderful Miss Paige over at Oh Nostalgia) is quickly becoming one of my new favorites as well.  I also have to talk for a minute about how smitten I am with this handmade leather cuff that I recently received from the talented Lisa Leonard.   Aside from the fact that it was custom made to say 'Melissa + Robbie' (!!!), it is also amazing in its ability to be so simple and organic and beautiful and perfect.  Seriously.  The style is so me, and the fact that I was able to have it engraved makes me cherish it even more.  I'll have this piece of jewelry forever and ever, mark my words.

Dress: Thrifted  //  Shoes: c/o Blowfish  //  Leather Cuff: c/o Lisa Leonard
Jacket: Ann Taylor (thrifted for $4)  //  Necklaces: c/o Oh Nostalgia and Roots & Feathers
Other bracelets: gifts  //  Hat: used to be wall decor in my mom's house (true story)

Okay, spill it.  Which of you have also channeled your inner Blossom via a '90s ensemble recently?  And which of you have no idea what I'm talking about?

My Style >> Summer Solstice

Those of you who read this blog regularly most likely know by now that I am a summer girl through and through.  I would estimate that a good 75% of my wardrobe consists of spring and summer clothing, which is actually a little ridiculous considering that I live in a city with one of the coldest winters in the country.  I can't help it though.  My absolute favorite things to wear are meant for warm weather: sundresses and maxi skirts, shorts and v-neck tees, lightweight cover-ups and sandals.  I love how summer clothes are laid back, comfy, and made for layering.  I love how summer clothes can easily go from day to night looks.  I love how summer clothes instantly evoke memories of bonfires with friends and coffee dates on patios and dancing barefoot to live music under the stars and leisurely sitting outside with the sun on my face and not a care in the freaking world.  Summer clothes win.

And since I'm rambling on about summer, I might as well mention that it (summer, that is) officially arrives in two days.  I'm even going to go as far as to title this my summer solstice outfit, because this particular type of look is a summertime staple for me.  I wear a lot of dresses this time of year, but the rest of the time you can find me in cut-off denim shorts, solid tees, and lots of accessories.  Accessories may even be the best part of summer dressing for me.  The most understated outfit can become a whole new look when you pile on loads of bracelets, add some great earrings and necklaces, and throw on a hat over messy hair.

Last week, I got a package in the mail from my dear friend Laura that contained these stunning earrings from her shop, Roots and Feathers.  I was thrilled when I opened it and saw them, and decided that they were going to be my official earrings of summer 2012.  Everything about them screams summer to me: the sunny gold metals, the bold turquoise beads, the earthy arrows and geometric triangles.  They are the exact type of accessory that I love to pair with simple outfits like this one when I want to dress them up.  Laura's work is just so incredible, and every time I get a new piece of her jewelry, I have a new favorite.

Another new summertime essential of mine is this seriously incredible pair of twisted rope sandals from Blowfish.  I'm not kidding you guys - they really are incredible.  They're called the Bria Sandals, and they're crazy comfortable and look amazing with everything.  I've been wearing them pretty much incessantly with everything from maxi dresses to tees/shorts to summery floral shift dresses. They're so versatile and well-made that I have a feeling they're going to be my daily shoe partner-in-crime over the next few months.

Like I said earlier, I'm all about layering and piling on the accessories with my summertime looks, and this outfit was certainly no exception.  While my summer accessory obsession might be a little excessive for some, it's the best part of getting dressed for me.  I spent the whole day working in this tee and cut-offs.  When it was time to go grab dinner, all I had to do was throw on the hat (which belongs to my husband) and the red cover up for a little color, and add a beaded belt, some jewelry, and my sandals.  Suddenly a bland + boring around-the-house outfit was transformed.  And even though it may sound like I spent an awful lot of time planning this outfit (at least if you go by the way I'm dissecting it here), it was effortless.  That's the rad thing about summer.  It's a time when everything slows down a bit, you don't have to try as hard, and things just seem to fall into place.  And oh yeah, summer is fun.  For me, it's the most wonderful time of the year.  With the most wonderful clothes of the year.

Earrings: c/o Roots & Feathers  //  Sandals: c/o Blowfish  //  Hat: my husband's
Shorts: cut off from thrifted jeans  //  Tee: Target  //  Cover-Up: F21  //  Belt: c/o Betty Belts
Bracelets:  handmade + gifts   //   Necklaces: my sister's + gift

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Happy summer friends!

My Style >> Mixing It Up

I've always been a fan of mixing it up when it comes to fashion.  I really like the pattern mixing trend that's going on right now, and I think if it's done right, it can look very chic without being gawdy or overwhelming.  I also love mixing soft, feminine styles with harder, edgy pieces, and muted colors with bolder ones.  For this outfit, I may or may not have combined all of these things.  When I first looked at the pictures, I was like, "wow, there is a whole lotta mixin' going on here; maybe I overdid it."  But since each piece on its own had sort of a boho vibe, I think it worked.  My opinion is that if you're going to be integrating a lot of different elements into one look, the key is to keep the overall style the same.

I ended up wearing this out to see live music later that night (the same day we took the photos), and will likely wear it again to at least one of the festivals I attend this summer.  The outfit was all sorts of comfortable (and kind of perfect for dancing, even with the wedges), but I felt "put together" enough for it to be ideal for a casual night out.

This dress was actually a trade I did with a friend.  My closet is literally overrun with short dresses, but I've really been digging (and wearing) the maxi length lately.  My friend had just purchased this dress, and it was way too long for her.  I'd offered to hem it, and when I saw it in person, I just couldn't shut up about its awesomeness.  I mean, look at that print!  The cut is kind of amazing too, and the fabric is all drape-y and summery and perfect.  She declared that it was meant for me and I therefore had to keep it, but I told her no way, that we were going to fix it up for her as planned.  She insisted, so I told her I'd only agree if she picked out something of mine.  Thankfully, the plethora of short dresses crammed into my closet were right up her alley, and she ended up with something she really adored.  Don't you love it when things work out that way?!

The top was thrifted years ago, and despite the fact that there is now a fairly large hole in the arm from wear, I can't part with it.  The fabric is this really great loose-weave, gauzy cotton, and the muted floral print reminds of old farmhouse curtains.  It's my favorite.  It's ultra feminine, and I liked how the sweet flower print contrasted with the tribal print of the dress.

You might remember the stunning feather necklace that I gushed about in my 'Farms and Feathers' post last month.  It was given to be by the oh-so-lovely Laura of Roots and Feathers, and I wore it almost everyday (literally) for a good month.  It was officially my favorite necklace of all time.  This changed, however, when I received another package from Laura last week.  Now the feather necklace is my second favorite, because I am completely and utterly smitten with the arrow necklace (aka the 'Baswell' necklace; that's my last name!) that was beautifully wrapped up inside.  Laura told me that she designed it with me in mind, which pretty much made my whole year.  For someone I have never met in person (we initially 'met' through her amazing blog), Laura knows me and my style to a tee, and this necklace pretty much proves that.  I. Love. It.  She also sent me these gorgeous triangle earrings, also from her Roots and Feathers line.  Like the necklace, I am absolutely crazy about them, and have worn them incessantly since the moment they arrived.

Both pieces of jewelry were perfect for the "mix it up" vibe I was going for with this outfit.  The metals and harder, geometric lines of the triangle shapes in the earrings and arrow pendant on the necklace were perfect for providing contrast with the soft, feminine fabrics of the dress and top.  At the same time, the wood and turquoise elements have the same bohemian feel as the clothing, which allowed everything to flow together and remain cohesive.  (And yes, I have been known to over think my outfit styling on occasion.  I like to blame it on the styling work I've done for bands, but in reality, I think it's just a weird, OCD-style quirk that comes along with designer brain.)

Blowfish Shoes Terrabiza

Can we talk about the shoes for a minute?  I mean, these shoes.  They're call the Terrabiza Sandal and they're from Blowfish and I want to snuggle up with them and whisper sweet nothings about how they're everything I've ever looked for in a shoe. The print (called 'Brown Belize Blanket') is a really cool tribal design, and I love how they found a way to mix such an earthy pattern with 3.5 inch wedges and all that strappiness.  It's like they extracted all of the very best parts of every type of sandal out there, stirred them up in a magic cauldron of goodness, sprinkled in a dash of comfort, and ended up with one glorious, goddess of a shoe.  In all seriousness, these truly are my favorite pair of shoes right now.  Best of all, they were exactly what I needed to put the final touch on my super-mix-it-up outfit.

Earrings and Necklace: c/o Roots and Feathers  //  Shoes: c/o Blowfish
Top: thrifted // Dress: trade (originally from F21) // Bracelets: thrifted and gift // Ring: Vividot

Do you guys like to mix it up in your outfits?  Do you combine different pattens in one look?  Different textures?  Color schemes?  Tell me tell me!

P.S. You might notice that I'm carrying a yellow sweater in the second to last photo.  A mustard cropped cardigan to be exact.  I originally had on that very sweater, but decided at the last minute that it just wasn't mixin' it up enough.  So it got kicked out of the party, and floral cotton button-down stepped in.  It's still one of my favorites pieces of clothing (I've had it for 5 years), but it just couldn't keep up with the rest of the outfit this time.  Sorry cute little mustard cardi.  I still love you.
