It's time for our annual "favorite classic Halloween costume" ideas post! As a fan of simple, classic Halloween costumes, I've been sharing this list for years, each time with updates and new additions. 

My kids are getting older and the days of them dressing up as pumpkins and black cats and witches are behind us. It's all about the trendy character costumes (sometimes with a gory take) for them these days, but my classic costume loving heart will always appreciate the years when they opted for the simple costumes.

Classic Halloween Costumes: Over 50 Ideas

It's that time of year again where I share my favorite classic Halloween costume ideas! I absolutely love simple, classic Halloween costumes, and have been sharing this list here for years, but each time I have new additions and updates. This is our biggest list so far!

When my kids were little, they were all about dressing up at black cats and pumpkins and witches. These days they usually opt for trendy characters instead. This year though, my daughter chose to be a devil and my son is dressing as a baseball player and Jack Skellington - all of which make my classic costumes loving heart happy!

The past two years we also did family costumes (Addams Family, as seen above, and The Wizard of Oz the year before). This year we decided to take a break from the stress involved with all of that and each do our own thing, but I'll always be a sucker for a family costume too.

50 Classic Halloween Costume Ideas

It's time for my annual Classic Halloween Costume Ideas post! I've been sharing this post in one way or another for years now, but each time with updates and additions. This is the most comprehensive list yet.

I let my kiddos choose their own costumes, and to my classic costume loving heart's dismay, the days of them dressing like pumpkins or black cats or witches are definitely over. These days they want store bought character costumes, the end. This year, my daughter is going to be Mal from Descendants and my son a Minion for their school Halloween parties and other Halloween activities that aren't actually on Halloween. 

But on Halloween day, we're doing a family costume for the second year in a row (this is new for us as my husband is almost always on the road with the band on Halloween), and it's definitely more on the classic costume end of the spectrum, which brings me all sorts of irrational joy. Last year our family was the Wizard of Oz, as seen above. While this is still a character costume theme, it's still a classic.

Halloween English Muffin Pizzas

When I was a kid, I thought english muffin pizzas were the bee's knees. Then I decided to try to make them as an adult several years ago, but with a Halloween twist. Success! I've shared these with you guys a few times over the years, but every year I seem to come up with some small improvements and want to share them again. My kids absolutely love decorating and eating this, and they're ready in minutes. 

Halloween English Muffin Pizzas

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS 

6 english muffins, halved

2 cups shredded cheddar 

2 cups shredded mozzarella

1 slice provolone  

1 cup pizza sauce  

black olives

green olives

green pepper

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Placed halved english muffins cut side up on a baking sheet. Spread pizza sauce on each. Top five of the english muffins with cheese shreds. On the remaining muffin, top with strips of the cheese slice, to look like a mummy. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until cheese is melted. Create jack-o-lanterns, spiders, mummies, and monsters with the olives and peppers!

These make a great after school snack or fun weekend lunch. Happy (early) Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! This is definitely the most unusual Halloween we've ever experienced (and that's saying a lot, considering it snowed like five inches here in Chicago on Halloween last year), but we are making the best of it. We're creating a socially distanced trick-or-treat table at the end of the driveway, and our kids will be visiting some other houses we know where people will be doing the same. Since we're not doing a full on trick-or-treating adventure this year, we also plan to do a fun candy hunt in our house and have a movie marathon. The silver lining to Halloween in a pandemic is that my husband, who is usually on the road with the band, is home this year and actually agreed to a family costume. (Those that know him in real life are probably as shocked as I am. It's bananas.) I'll share the family costume this weekend on my Instagram, but for now, here are some photos of past costumes.

35 Timeless Halloween Costume Ideas

Those of you who read here regularly are probably shaking your heads, because I do this post every. single. year. In my defense, I update it with new ideas each time. But even if I didn't, I'd still share it, because I am a complete sucker for simple, timeless Halloween costumes. 

Over the past couple of years, my kids have started to choose costumes that are store bought, modern characters (and usually super low quality, but hey, they want what they want), but I will always appreciate the years that they enjoyed more old-fashioned costumes. This year, my daughter actually requested to be a witch (which was thrilling for me) for school. My son wants to be Spider-Man.
